Laura's Bosnia Blog-Part 6 - 9/14/09

Bosnia Blog-Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, 6:30 am
As I sit on my balcony, listening to the waves on the shore of the

Adriatic Sea, I have to pinch myself. I would have never imagined
that Croatia would be one of the first places for me to visit outside
of America.

Yesterday we took the Tube to Westminster Abbey for worship. What a
beautiful cathedral. It was built in the 13th century and the

intricate carvings, stained glass and sculptures are breathtaking. I
thoroughly enjoyed listening to the boy’s choir. Their voices blend so
beautifully....that must be what the voices of angels sound like. I
loved hearing the organ, as well, and it made me think of my uncle
Don, who is the organist at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.
The whole service was just so beautiful, peaceful and reverent, and I
thought to myself that he is so fortunate to be surrounded by the same
beauty and serenity on a daily basis.

We headed to Gatwick airport at 1:15 and arrived in Dubrovnik last
night around 8:45 pm so it was too dark to see much of anything. We
were greeted at the airport by 2 members of the World Vision staff
from Sarajevo, Vidad, our driver for the week and Jasmina, our
interpreter. Angela met Jasmina in 1994, during the war when she was
in Bosnia. She had asked for an interpreter and the British army
provided Jasmina. It quickly became a lifelong friendship.

We drove from the airport to our hotel and were settled into our
rooms, on the top floor of our building at the very top of a very long

stair-lined walkway. We were exhausted by the time we'd made it to the
top. Our rooms were immaculate and well equipped. I wasn't hungry so I
skipped dinner, choosing instead to spend time on my balcony, writing
in my journal and enjoying the beautiful, cool evening.

Once again, sleep didn't come easily. I was awake until 3:30 am, but
rather enjoyed the thunder, lightening and rain outside. The
electricity flickered off and on for several hours and around 4:30,
went off for good. I woke up to no power, but I guess this is not
unusual. We're meeting for breakfast at 8:00 am, and then at 10:00,

we're leaving for Mostar.

Oh, the power just came back on so perhaps I should get ready for the
day. More tonight.....

P.S.  To those of you who have written to me in response to my blog,
thank you. Your comments make me smile and have touched me. Your words
are such an encouragement to me and I'm so grateful for your prayers
and support. I love you all!
